Choosing an interior door involves considering available space, functionality and the overall design of the room. Internal pivot doors rotate around pivot points positioned at the top and bottom of the door rather than using traditional hinges along one side. This creates a distinctive opening movement and allows designers to use wider or visually substantial door panels in appropriate spaces.
By comparison, internal sliding doors move horizontally along a track instead of swinging into the room. They may slide along the face of a wall or disappear into a cavity built within the wall. Because the door does not require a traditional swing area, sliding systems are frequently used where maximising usable floor space is a priority.
How Does a Pivot Door Work?
A conventional hinged door is attached to one side of the frame using hinges. A pivot door operates differently, with pivot hardware installed at the top and bottom.
The pivot point can be positioned close to the edge or further towards the centre of the door. When positioned away from the edge, part of the door moves in one direction while the larger section moves in the other.
This movement can create a distinctive architectural feature, particularly when the door panel is large.
How Does a Sliding Door Work?
Sliding doors use rollers or similar hardware to move horizontally along a track. Surface-mounted systems remain visible against the wall when open, while cavity sliding doors move into a concealed pocket inside the wall.
This design eliminates the floor area normally required for a swinging door. As a result, furniture and other items can often be positioned closer to the doorway.
Comparing Space Requirements
Space is one of the biggest differences between the two designs. Pivot doors still require clearance for the door panel to rotate. The exact amount of space depends on the width of the door and location of the pivot point.
Sliding doors require horizontal space instead. Surface-mounted systems need an unobstructed section of wall alongside the opening, while cavity systems require sufficient internal wall space to accommodate the door.
Design and Appearance
Pivot doors are often selected when the doorway itself is intended to become an architectural feature. Large timber, glass or composite panels can create a strong visual effect.
Sliding doors can provide either a contemporary or traditional appearance depending on their materials and hardware. Concealed cavity systems offer a particularly streamlined look because the door can largely disappear when opened.
Installation Considerations
Both door types require appropriate installation. Pivot doors need hardware capable of supporting the weight and dimensions of the panel. Correct alignment is important for smooth operation.
Sliding systems require properly installed tracks and rollers. Cavity sliders generally require more planning because the wall must contain a suitable pocket for the door, making them easier to incorporate during construction or renovation.
Which Door Is Suitable?
The better option depends on the room rather than one design being universally preferable. Pivot doors can work well in larger spaces where an impressive opening and wide door panel are desired.
Sliding doors are particularly practical for smaller rooms, wardrobes, ensuites and areas where conventional door swings would interfere with furniture or circulation.
Both options can provide practical alternatives to standard hinged doors. By considering available wall and floor space, door dimensions, installation requirements and the desired appearance, homeowners and designers can select a system that suits the way the room will actually be used.
